OUR VISION: Our vision is a literate America in which all children have access to books and discover the joys and value of reading.

OUR MISSION:To motivate young children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8.

"Do you have a free handout about reading that we can give to parents?"

So many teachers and administrators asked Jim Trelease that question. One of his first retirement projects was to create a series of such free handouts. Based on his books, lectures, and films, the tri-fold double-sided brochures are aimed at parents, teachers, librarians—even future teachers and parents.

In 2007, Reach Out and Read New Jersey was established as state wide coalition with a mission to expand services to more children throughout communities in New Jersey. Our goal is to target at-risk areas so that more children start kindergarten in New Jersey with the pre-literacy skills they need to succeed in the classroom – thus improving the learning environment – and the educational outcomes for all the children in our schools.
