Syllabication Splitting Rule 2
Ok, so before you do this second syllabication splitting rule you need to be sure you understand the phonics principles discussed on the previous page.
Rule 2 Simply Stated: When a vowel is followed by just one consonant, the consonant moves away.
The first thing you always do with a word is 'walk' under it and mark everything. Put a dot under all the vowels and put a caret under all the consonant blends and consonant digraphs to indicate that they belong together and do not split. The caret 'traps' them together. DO NOT GO ABOVE THE WORD YET, AS YOU DID WHEN WORKING WITH THE PHONICS PRINCIPLES. ONCE YOU ARE WORKING WITH MULTISYLLABIC WORDS, YOU HAVE TO SPLIT THE WORD INTO SYLLABLES BEFORE MARKING THE TOP OF THE WORD.
Once your walk under the word is done, 'run' back to the first vowel. If you have one consonant after the first vowel, draw a line down the middle between the vowel and consonant.....which, in turn, let's the consonant MOVE, or RUN away to indicate the beginning of a new syllable. Now your word is split at the syllable juncture. NOTE: If you have a consonant blend or a consonant digraph that is marked by a caret, then that is considered ONE CONSONANT. Therefore, you will still split between the vowel and the 'ONE CONSONANT', even when the caret is there.
To see how to mark words, refer to this poster as well
Now it's time to go above each syllable and apply the phonics principles to each syllable as though it were a single word. Then read 'syllable one' according to the vowel markings, and then read 'syllable two' according to the vowel markings. Now blend the two syllables together to read the word.
Are you seeing how vowel knowledge is critical to every word?
